Pulps from the Crypt

Pulps from the Crypt is a nifty virtual store for collectors of old pulp magazines. They have it all, from science fiction and fantasy to adventure and detective stories. Check it out.

You Are Very Cold, and This Feels Like an Adventure

From The Slate Book Review: 'Think back to the worst relationship you were ever in. The one full of shouting matches and long separations; the one where you were taken advantage of over and over; the one you both clung to for far too long. Remember how it felt as though your fate had been taken completely out of your hands? That whatever decision you made, your story was hurtling unstoppably in one direction—toward disaster?" Been there, done that. Read the review, and the book.

Meg Cabot's Blog -- Simply the Best

There are only a few blogs I follow (who has time?!), but one of my favorites of the few is that of YA writer Meg Cabot, she of The Princess Diaries. I know, you're saying, Princess Diaries? You gotta be kidding. No, I'm not, although Meg kids around a lot herself, which is what makes the blog so great. She spends more blog time entertaining than complaining. While you're there, be sure to check out her VidLit, which is also funny.

Rare Book Room Includes British Library Works

Rare Book Room is a special site because these are digitized pictures of the actual pages of the books. Project Gutenberg also is wonderful, however only the texts are available there. Rare Book Room has so far scanned just 400 books but they include rare volumes from the British Library, the Bodleian Library, the University of Edinburgh Library, and the National Library of Scotland that we previously would have no way of seeing except in person. Great site!

For Bibliophiles Everywhere

This nifty little video about printing visually shows the difference between hot type and cold type. We can design our own pages these days, but we can't make them look three-dimensional like this. Great stuff!

The Art Of War, by Sun Tzu

You've seen it in the stores and you've waited for the movie. Sorry, there is no movie. But don't be disappointed because now you can download it from Project Gutenberg for free. With no charge even. Get a copy for YOUR library and get ready to conquer the world.

Neil Gaiman on Fairy Tales

In the wake of the British release in theaters of Neil Gaiman's Stardust, he wrote an interesting piece about fairy tales and their relationship to his novel for Britain's Guardian Unlimited. Of particular note, he makes the point that fairy tales originally were tales of the fantastic for adults. But you knew that, didn't you?

User Manual, users guide, operation instruction

User Manual, users guide, operation instruction

Got an older TV, computer, VCR or other electronic equipment whose operating manual got sucked into a black hole years ago? You might be able to find a replacement here. If you're planning on a garage sale soon, having a manual will help sales too.
